Jasper County States Attorney, Chad M. Miller, announced that on March 29,2017, an Investigation into threats written on the wall of a bathroom stall at the Newton Community High School was completed. Law enforcement officers with the Illinois State Police and Newton Police Department worked with Newton Community High School Principal Beth Probst and Superintendent Andrew Johnson to identify a suspected student. The suspected student has been removed from the Newton Community High School and faces future legal proceedings under the Illinois Juvenile Court Act.
The threats were directed toward another student, whom has been identified and briefed by law enforcement. The Illinois State Police and Newton Police Department will have increased intervention at the Newton Community High School over the next several days as they finalize their investigation.
State’s Attorney Miller commented, “The safety of our children is something we take very seriously. I commend the Newton Community High School and Superintendent Johnson for addressing the matter professionally and quickly. The Newton Police Department and Illinois State Police worked diligently together to resolve the matter.” Mr. Miller was happy to have the investigation resolved so that students can go back to business as usual.
