GOP Responds To Madigan Budget Demands
(Springfield, IL) — In Springfield, the House Republican leader says he’s ready to negotiate on Speaker Michael Madigan’s new budget demands, but that doesn’t mean a budget deal is closer. GOP leader Jim Durkin said today that he can’t approve Madigan’s versions of a property tax freeze and workers comp reform. After years of railing against Governor Rauner’s insistence on non-budgetary items in a budget deal, Madigan is now making his own demands, including Rauner’s signature on a school funding reform bill that Rauner has said he opposes. Lawmakers are facing a Friday deadline to reach a budget deal or lose access to millions of dollars in federal highway funds.
