Despite a huge turnout and more than two-hours of comments, mostly in support of keeping it, the Mattoon City Council voted to eliminate the fire department’s ambulance service. City officials estimate the move will save Mattoon approximately $300,000 a year. Firefighters Local 691 will likely file a grievance against the city.
