Matt Wieters drilled a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning as the Nationals surged past the Cubs, 9-4, at Wrigley Field. Willson Contreras had two solo homers and Kyle Schwarber also went deep for Chicago in the rubber match of the three-game set. Carl Edwards Jr. took the loss.
The Cubs open a three-game series with the Giants tonight in San Francisco. At 58-and-52, Chicago is a half-game ahead of the Brewers for first place in the NL Central. Jake Arrieta gets the start on the mound for the Cubs. The Giants counter with Matt Moore.
Chris Young piled up five RBI to help lead the Red Sox past the White Sox 6-3 at Fenway Park. Chicago starter Mike Pelfrey surrendered six runs in five-and-two-thirds to take his 10th loss. The White Sox were swept in the four-game set and have dropped six-straight overall.
The White Sox and Astros open a three-game series in Chicago tomorrow night. Chicago is an AL-worst 41-and-68 on the season. Derek Holland toes the rubber in the opener for the Sox. Houston sends out Dallas Keuchel.
The Cardinals scored nine times in the fourth inning to break open a one-run game and beat the Reds 13-4 in Cincinnati. It was highlighted by Jose Martinez’s first career grand slam. Kolten Wong had three hits, an RBI and scored twice as St. Louis took two-of-three.
The Cardinals now begin a four-game, home-and-home series with the Royals. The teams play tonight and tomorrow in Kansas City, and then Wednesday and Thursday at Busch Stadium. Carlos Martinez starts tonight for St. Louis, while Ian Kennedy goes for KC.
Training camp continues for the Bears. Chicago will be back on the practice field at 11:00 this morning in Bourbonnais. The Bears open preseason play at home against the Broncos on Thursday.
The Dolphins are adding quarterback depth following a serious knee injury to starter Ryan Tannehill. Multiple outlets report the Dolphins have agreed to a one-year, 10-million-dollar contract with signal-caller Jay Cutler. The 34-year-old was originally going into broadcasting after being released by the Bears earlier this offseason.
Falcons cornerback Jalen Collins is going to miss the first 10 games of the season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances for the second time. Collins was also suspended for four games last season. The LSU product had 31 tackles and two interceptions last year.
Justin Turner and Cody Bellinger hit two-run homers as the Dodgers drilled the Mets, 8-0, in New York. Logan Forsythe smacked a two-run single during a three-run first for LA, which won all seven meetings with New York this season. Hyun-Jin Ryu struck out eight over seven innings of one-hit ball to improve to 4-and-6.
The Phillies are mourning the loss of one of their all-time greats. Former catcher and Wall-of-Fame member Darren Daulton has died after a battle with brain cancer at 55 years old. Daulton played parts of 14 seasons with the Phillies and won a World Series with the Marlins before retiring in 1997.
Marin Truex Jr. is the champion at the I Love New York 355 at Watkins Glen International. Truex Jr. took the lead for the final time on lap 88-of-90 and held on to secure the victory. Matt Kenseth took second place and rookie Daniel Suarez finished a career-best third. Denny Hamlin and Clint Bowyer round out the top five.
