Ex-Gymnastics Doctor Nassar Sentenced Up To 175 Years
(Lansing, MI) — Former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar is being sentenced up to 175 years for sexually abusing women and girls. Judge Rosemarie Aquilina made the announcement in a Lansing, Michigan courtroom today after more than 150 accusers, including many Olympic gymnasts, were allowed to read their impact statements. Aquilina said it was her honor and privilege to sentence Nassar, adding “You do not deserve to walk outside a prison again.”
Before sentencing, Aquilina read the letter Nassar gave her last week. In it, Nasar said he was innocent, writing “I was a good doctor because my treatments worked,” adding “The media convinced them that what I did was wrong.” He went to say in the letter that his accusers are only “seeking media attention and financial reward.” That line drew laughter and gasps in the audience. Aquilina then wondered allowed how many more victims Nassar assaulted who have not come forward.
Nassar has already been sentenced to 60 years in federal prison for child pornography crimes. He is scheduled to be sentenced next week on more assault convictions in Eaton County, Michigan.
