UPDATED: FL Governor Promises Accountability In Bridge Collapse

(Miami, FL) — Florida Governor Rick Scott says the state will hold people accountable if there’s any wrongdoing behind today’s pedestrian bridge collapse in Miami. Speaking in Miami today, Scott said his heart goes out to anyone impacted by the collapse. He added that state will provide whatever it can to help with the rescue effort that’s underway and give aid to the families affected.

UPDATED: Hospital Officials Release Numbers On Patients Admitted To Hospital Following Bridge Collapse

(Miami-Dade County, FL) — Officials with Kendall Regional Medical Center in Miami say ten level one trauma patients were admitted to the hospital following the bridge collapse near Florida International University. Two of the patients are in extremely critical condition. Both were given emergency surgery. Eight others are in stable condition. Injuries range from broken bones to cardiac arrest. Officials say the age range of patients seen is anywhere from about 20 to 50. A couple dozen physicians and surgeons remain at the hospital, ready to treat any other individuals. Fire officials say it’s unlikely for a significant number of patients to be sent to the hospital at this point.

UPDATED: CO Structural Monitoring Company Removes FIU Ped Bridge Comments

(Louisville, CO) — A Colorado structural monitoring company is explaining why it removed tweets featuring a now-collapsed pedestrian bridge in Florida. BDI says they’re deeply saddened about this afternoon’s collapse right by Florida International University. A company official says the social media comments were removed out of respect for the individuals and families affected by the collapse. The posts featured the company saying it was “thrilled to have performed” the structural monitoring of the bridge being put in place. It also featured video of the bridge being installed. The bridge was constructed using a new method called Accelerated Bridge Construction. Workers built the structure off-site, then swung it into place after it’s finished. FIU officials said the method would make it safer for everyone involved.

UPDATED: Firefighters Worried About Structural Stability Of Collapsed FL Ped Bridge

(Miami-Dade County, FL) — There’s still concern about the structural stability of a collapsed Florida pedestrian bridge. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Division Chief P.A. Estopinan says there’s a 30-foot slab of concrete on the north section of the bridge which rescuers are worried could collapse. He also says crews will work throughout the night to rescue people from the rubble. The bridge collapsed this afternoon right by Florida International University crushing eight vehicles. Eight people have been taken to the hospital, and several deaths have been reported. It isn’t known what caused the bridge to tumble down.

Miami-Dade County Deputy Mayor Maurice Kemp says they’re in full search and rescue mode to find anyone trapped beneath the rubble. The bridge tumbled down this afternoon right by Florida International University. Miami-Dade Fire Chief Dave Downey says eight vehicles were trapped beneath the rubble and eight people are hospitalized. No would confirm how many people were killed in the collapse, but Kemp noted there were “several deaths.” It isn’t known why the bridge collapsed.

(Miami-Dade County, FL) — Cranes are starting to remove portions of the Florida pedestrian bridge which suddenly collapsed. Crews are going to try to lift parts of the bridge where police do not believe anyone was under when it tumbled down by Florida International University this afternoon. Multiple vehicles were crushed by the structure and several people are believed dead. It isn’t known what caused the over 14-million-dollar bridge to collapse. Crews used a new construction process for the bridge, building it off-site, then installing it over Southwest 8th Street last weekend.
