UPDATED: Hospital Officials Release Numbers On Patients Admitted To Hospital Following Bridge Collapse
(Miami-Dade County, FL) — Officials with Kendall Regional Medical Center in Miami say ten level one trauma patients were admitted to the hospital following the bridge collapse near Florida International University. Two of the patients are in extremely critical condition. Both were given emergency surgery. Eight others are in stable condition. Injuries range from broken bones to cardiac arrest. Officials say the age range of patients seen is anywhere from about 20 to 50. A couple dozen physicians and surgeons remain at the hospital, ready to treat any other individuals. Fire officials say it’s unlikely for a significant number of patients to be sent to the hospital at this point.

UPDATED: CO Structural Monitoring Company Removes FIU Ped Bridge Comments
(Louisville, CO) — A Colorado structural monitoring company is explaining why it removed tweets featuring a now-collapsed pedestrian bridge in Florida. BDI says they’re deeply saddened about this afternoon’s collapse right by Florida International University. A company official says the social media comments were removed out of respect for the individuals and families affected by the collapse. The posts featured the company saying it was “thrilled to have performed” the structural monitoring of the bridge being put in place. It also featured video of the bridge being installed. The bridge was constructed using a new method called Accelerated Bridge Construction. Workers built the structure off-site, then swung it into place after it’s finished. FIU officials said the method would make it safer for everyone involved.

Estopinan says there’s a 30-foot slab of concrete on the north section of the bridge which rescuers are worried could collapse. He also says crews will work throughout the night to rescue people from the rubble. The bridge collapsed this afternoon right by Florida International University crushing eight vehicles.
