Report: US Made Threats Over Breast Feeding
(Geneva) — Reports are surfacing about a U.S. effort to weaken a World Health Assembly resolution in support of breast feeding being best for babies, instead pushing the interests of formula companies. The “New York Times” reports Ecuador introduced the resolution at a meeting in Geneva in May. But the U.S. threatened to pull military aid and slap on trade sanctions if Ecuador didn’t withdrawal the measure. The U.S. delegation apparently took issue with the wording that nations “protect, promote and support breast-feeding” and limit inaccurate marketing of breast-milk substitutes. Ecuador and other countries backed off, but Russia went ahead and introduced it. The U.S. says it was just trying to eliminate hurdles for mothers seeking nutrition for their babies.
