(Washington, DC) — A newly released CDC report shows that urgent care clinics are overprescribing antibiotics. In fact, nearly half of all patients going to urgent care for treatment of conditions that don’t require antibiotics, are given a prescription for one anyway. That is, the CDC shows, three times as often as antibiotics are prescribed at a traditional doctor’s office. Doctors say that unnecessary use of antibiotics can result in severe side effects. It can also lead patients to develop an immunity to some antibiotics so they’re not able to fight off “superbugs.”
