Stan Mikita, arguably the greatest player in Chicago Blackhawks’ history, died today at the age of 78. Mikita, the team’s all-time leading scorer, a two-time MVP and eight-time All-Star, passed away due to Lewy Body dementia. Mikita, who escaped communist rule in his native Czechoslovakia as an 8-year-old boy moving to Ontario with his aunt and uncle in 1948, spend all of his 22-year career with Chicago. In addition to being the team’s all-time leading scorer, Mikita is the all-time leader in games played and assists, and is second all-time in goals. Also, he won league scoring titles four times. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983. His number 21 was the first number to be retired by the Blackhawks.
