Study: 4-In-10 Americans Struggle To Pay For Basic Needs
(Washington, DC) — A new study says four-in-ten Americans are struggling to pay their basic needs. The report from the Urban Institute says nearly half of all American households are having trouble paying for groceries and housing. The researchers found that despite the economy being near full employment, almost 40-percent of adults between 18 and 64 years old said they experienced material hardship in 2017. The study found that many of those experiencing hardship were middle-class families struggling with health care bills. The co-author of the study told CBS News the findings suggest that a middle-class income may not guarantee protection from hardship.
