An expert on school sports injuries says it’s time for a smarter approach to the problem. Dr. Brian Babka at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Chicago says school sports used to be more informal with fewer injuries.
The National SAFE KIDS campaign says about one-tenth of American kids who participate in school sports every year end up injured. Babka says about nine-percent of those injuries are concussions, but the most common injuries are sprains and strains. He says kids need to stop playing through pain and use new programs like Active Rehabilitation. That program helps athletes heal better by slowly working their way back from injuries rather than staying away from exercise for weeks.
