The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Wins Most Emmys This Year
(Undated) — It was a night full of jokes, nods at diversity in Hollywood, and a marriage proposal at the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards. Streaming services dominated this year, with Netflix and HBO snagging 23 awards each. More non-white actors and actresses were also nominated than ever before. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel swept the show with five wins, including Best Comedy Series, and Lead Actress and Supporting Actress in a Comedy, Best Comedy and Best Directing for a Comedy. Game of Thrones picked up Best Drama Series, with Peter Dinklage winning Supporting Actor in a Drama. Henry Winkler also scored his first Emmy for his role in the HBO series, Barry. Other winners throughout the night were Thandie Newton, Matthew Rhys, Bill Hader, Jeff Daniels, The Americans, West World and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.
The show was hosted by comedians Colin Jost and Michael Che from SNL’s Weekend Update. Che starred in a sketch where he handed out “Reparation Emmys” to overlooked black actors, and said that he feels Emmy winners do not thank Jesus enough in their acceptance speeches. Meanwhile, Glenn Weiss asked his girlfriend to marry him on stage while picking up Directing for a Variety Special. Betty White also got a standing ovation when she came out to give a speech about her time in show business and being considered the “first lady of television.”
