(Dublin) — A new study out of Ireland says certain foods could help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s. Doctors Riona Mulachy and John Nolan say a certain compound in nutrients found in bright colored foods could be the key to preserving the mind.
The 18-month study, “Nutritional Intervention to Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease,” looked at the effects of spinach, broccoli, trout, peppers, melon and fish oil supplements. These foods contain carotenoids and the study says when this nutrient is combined with omega-three fatty acid, the risk of dementia.
Nolan says loss in cognitive functions and low carotenoids are directly connected.
Mulachy says regularly eating a healthy diet lowers your risk factors.
