Matthews: League Is Getting Soft
(Undated) — Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews says the NFL is getting soft after he was called for roughing the quarterback Sunday. Matthews tackled Washington Redskins QB Alex Smith in the third quarter of the Packers’ 31-17 loss. It looked like a normal play, but he was flagged for landing on Smith with his body weight. The call drew the ire of many fans, but was defended in a tweet from NFL Football Operations as a legitimate enforcement of the rules. The rule is the result of a play last year that left a player with a broken collarbone. Matthews said the league is going in a direction a lot of people don’t like and that the only thing hard about the NFL is the fines they give to guys like him who play the game hard.
