Las Vegas Strip To Go Dark In Honor Of Shooting Victims
(Las Vegas, NV) — The Las Vegas Strip is going dark today on the one-year-anniversary of the mass shooting that left 58 people dead at a country musical festival. Last year, gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on a crowd of concert goers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, injuring over 400 people. Paddock was holed up in a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel. After firing over one-thousand rounds of ammunition, police found Paddock dead from a self-inflicted gun shot wound. The FBI is still trying to determine a motive behind the massacre, even after a 10-month long investigation.
The marquees along the Strip will be dimmed as part of several memorial events scheduled today. A sunrise service will include 58 seconds of silence, one for each person who died. This evening, prayer vigil will be held at City Hall and a new remembrance wall will be dedicated. Flags across the state will be flown at half staff, as well. A 5K run, a blood drive and a silent auction are also planned to commemorate the tragedy that is categorized as the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.
