Illinois Public Health Managers See Polio-Like Disease
(Springfield, IL) — Illinois is among the states dealing with a rare, polio-like disease that’s sickening children across the country. Illinois Department of Public Health director Nirav Shah this week said that nine children have been diagnosed with acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM. But Shah says no one knows how the disease is spreading, or why it affects mostly children. As of the end of September, the CDC said it confirmed 38 AFM cases in 16 states.
