Nearly Half Of U.S. Births Outside Marriage
(Undated) — Nearly half the babies born in the U.S. are born to people who aren’t married. That’s according to a new United Nations report whose authors say it reflects cultural and economic shifts that have evolved over the past half-century. The report says 40-percent of U.S. births now happen outside marriage, up from only ten-percent in 1970. The U.N. report out today finds the numbers are even higher in the European Union. Sixty-percent of babies in the E.U. are born to women who aren’t married. The report says the vast majority of out-of-wedlock births both here and in Europe are to unmarried couples living together, rather than to single mothers.
