Monsanto Loses Verdict; Damages Reduced
(San Francisco, CA) — A judge in San Francisco is ruling against Monsanto while also slashing the amount they must pay in damages in a high profile case. The company was sued by Benicia School District grounds keeper, Dewayne Lee Johnson, after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Johnson claimed he developed the condition from spraying the herbicide Roundup, which Monsanto manufacturers, as part of his job. In August, a jury awarded him 289-million-dollars in damages, which Judge Suzanne Bolanos said was too high. In yesterday’s decision, Bolanos affirmed the jury’s verdict that the weed killer caused Johnson’s cancer, but reduced the amount awarded to him to 78-million-dollars.
