(Manoa, HI) — Bitcoin could be ecologically unsound. Researchers at the University of Hawaii told the Star-Advertiser that the virtual currency is having a negative effect on the global climate. They say the problem comes from the fact that cryptocurrency trading requires heavy hardware that uses a lot of electricity. The resulting carbon dioxide emissions could have a catastrophic effect if the digital currency gains worldwide popularity. Even though Bitcoin accounts for only a small fraction of financial transactions, scientists say it was responsible for 69-million metric tons of CO2 last year alone.
