UPDATED: Former Marine ID’d As Gunman In Southern Calif Bar Shooting
(Thousand Oaks, CA) — A former Marine with a troubled history is identified as the gunman in a mass shooting at a Southern California bar. Investigators say 28-year-old Ian Long killed 12 people and then took his own life at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks last night. Records show he used a legally purchased Glock .45 caliber pistol in the shooting rampage that also left more than a dozen others injured. Long served one combat tour in Afghanistan where he earned the rank of corporal in 2011. According to service records, he spent five years in the Marine Corps as a machine gunner.
Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said Long may have been struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. Deputies previously had been called to his home for a domestic disturbance, but Long was not taken into custody after being evaluated by a mental health specialist. The sheriff said they’re still looking for a motive in the shooting rampage at the crowded country music bar about 40 miles west of Los Angeles.

UPDATED: Police: California Bar Mass Shooting Suspect Has Police History MORE
(Thousand Oaks, CA) — There’s still no motive but authorities confirm the suspect who killed 12 people at a Southern California bar had dealings with police in the past. Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said deputies were called to the home of 28-year-old Ian Long for a domestic disturbance, reporting that he was acting irate. They learned Long was a Marine veteran, but did not positively believe he had PTSD. Dean says they still have no motive for the shooting.
Long approached the bar dressed in black, shooting a security guard before entering the bar and shooting some of the other security guards and employees. Officials are reporting he used a Glock handgun with an extended magazine that he purchased legally. Names of the victims involved in the shooting will be released by officials sometime today. Dean says at this time, they believe Long turned the gun on himself, as he was found already deceased in an office adjacent to the entrance. At this time, they don’t have motive to believe the employees or others were targeted.
