Argo Spy Who Smuggled Hostages Out Of Iran Dies
(Frederick, MD) — The spy whose top accomplishment was the basis of the Hollywood film “Argo” is dead. Tony Mendez died January 19th at an assisted living center in Frederick, Maryland. Mendez was a 25-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency and the man who disguised himself as an Irish filmmaker to smuggle six State Department employees out of Tehran during the Iran hostage crisis. That success became the real-life event that inspired the Oscar-winning movie. Mendez was 78 and had suffered from Parkinson’s disease. Ben Affleck played Mendez in the film.
