Frost Quakes Heard Across Parts Of Illinois
(Davenport, IA) — The loud boom you may have heard during the worst of yesterday’s cold was not a tree branch falling or a car crashing. The National Weather Service says it got several reports yesterday of frost quakes. That’s the phenomenon that occurs when water rapidly freezes inside the ground, expands and makes a loud noise. Forecasters say they got reports of frost quakes from the Quad Cities down to central Illinois.
