WINTER STORM TO AFFECT CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST ILLINOIS TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY, SLIPPERY TRAVEL LIKELY TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY…
A winter storm system will push into the area Tuesday night, with light snow developing rapidly from south to north during the evening. By midnight, all of central and southeast Illinois should be experiencing wintry weather. Snow accumulations Tuesday night and Wednesday look to reach to around 1 to 2 inches in many areas.
One thing that could reduce snow amounts after they are on the ground is an expected transition from snow to freezing rain or freezing drizzle for a period of time across all of central and southeast Illinois. That transition is expected to start after midnight Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday morning. How long the freezing rain or freezing drizzle will last in any one location is still a bit uncertain, as surface temperatures are expected to eventually climb above freezing from south to north Wednesday morning. Current indications show the potential for 0.10″ to 0.15″ of icing from freezing rain across areas north of I-72. Lower amounts of icing are projected south of I-72, where the precipitation is expected to change to rain sooner on Wednesday.
Remain alert for updates to this developing winter storm system, as hazardous travel impacts are likely, especially for the Wednesday morning commute.
