According to Illinois State Police, there was a traffic crash resulting in personal injury along I-57 Southbound near milepost 237 in the early morning hours of Wednesday. Preliminary investigation shows that at approximately 12:35 a.m. that Dawn R Garrelts, 52, of Onarga Illinois was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-57. Eldemire R. Berlanda, 38, of Mexico was traveling southbound on I-57 in the left lane when they collided head-on. The collision caused heavy damage to both drivers, both of them sustained injuries that appeared not to be life threatening. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and were transported to an area hospital. Dawn Garrelts was charged with: Aggravated Driving under the Influence of Alcohol, Improper Lane Usage, and Operating a Vehicle with No Insurance.
