Mariners Top A’s In MLB Opener
(Tokyo) — A grand slam from Domingo Santana in the third inning helped the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland A’s 9-7 in the first game of the 2019 Major League Baseball season in Tokyo. Marco Gonzales gave up three earned runs on seven hits over six-innings to get the win. In his return to Japan, Ichiro Suzuki was hitless, but drew a walk in two plate appearances. Suzuki became the second-oldest position player to start on Opening Day at the age of 45. Mike Fiers started for the Athletics and took the loss, lasting only three innings after giving up five earned runs on four hits. This marked the earliest opening day ever for Major League Baseball and actually started on the last day of winter. The brief two-game series continues Thursday at the Tokyo Dome.
