The Shores Jewelry building was destroyed by fire last night. The Mattoon Fire Department received the call just before 5:40, and upon arrival, found heavy smoke and fire on the third floor. Eight area departments assisted in bringing the fire under control. They were able to stop it from spreading to adjacent structures. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Officials will be on scene today to not only determine the cause of the fire, but also to investigate the structure and its future. For the time begin, Broadway Avenue between 16th and 17th Streets is closed.
