Senator: DCFS Failing Rural, Downstate Illinois
(Springfield, IL) — A central Illinois state senator says the Department of Child and Family Services is failing downstate and rural areas. Senator Andy Manar said at a hearing yesterday in Springfield that the agency is often unresponsive or unavailable in rural communities, and is failing in larger downstate communities. Manar cited the example of a two-year-old Decatur girl who died from starving, freezing, and neglect from her mother and mother’s boyfriend. The DCFS inspector general says nearly 100 kids involved with the agency died last fiscal year.
