Twelve Hundred Dead Of Measles In Madagascar
(Antananarivo, Madagascar) — An estimated 12-hundred people in Madagascar have died as the nation is in the midst of a measles epidemic. According to the World Health Organization, over 15-thousand cases have been reported. Most of those infected are young children who haven’t been immunized. WHO information says that only 58-percent of the people on the island have been vaccinated and immunization rates need to be 90-to-95-percent to be effective in preventing outbreaks. Adding to the continuous spread of the illness is the fact that nearly 50-percent of the children in Madagascar are malnourished, which can increase their risk of serious complications and death from a measles infection.
