UPDATED: Singer, Actress and Animal Rights Activist Doris Day Dies
(Carmel Valley, CA) — Legendary singer, actress and animal rights activist Doris Day is dead at the age of 97. The Doris Day Animal Foundation said she died early today at her Carmel Valley, California, home. She was born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff April 3rd, 1924, although some sources list her year of birth as 1922. She began her career as a singer during the big band era in 1939. Her popularity soared with the release of “Sentimental Journey,” which she recorded during her years with Les Brown and his Band of Renown. She remained with Brown until 1945 when she decided to embark on a solo career. Two years later, she signed with Columbia records and remained with that label for the next 20 years. During that time, she recorded over 650 songs, making her one of the most recorded and successful popular singers of the last century.
Her film debut was in 1948 in “Romance on the High Seas,” later starring in a series of musicals opposite Gordon McRae. She later made appearances in the films “Teacher’s Pet” starring Clark Gable, “Pillow Talk” opposite Rock Hudson and later, “The Thrill of It All” opposite James Garner. She also starred opposite James Stewart in the 1956 Alfred Hitchock film “The Man Who Knew Too Much” in which she sang what was to become her signature song, “Que, Sera, Sera.” That same song served as the theme for her short lived tv series “The Doris Day Show” which ran from 1968 to 1973. She remained active as a recording artist with the release of the recording “My Heart” in 2011, dedicated to her only child, son Terry Melcher, whom she outlived. Doris Day, dead at the age of 97.

(Undated) — Singer and actress Doris Day is dead. Her foundation announced her death this morning. She had been retired from show business for a number of years now, living in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California and was a life long animal rights activist. Doris Day was was 97.
