9-11 Compensation Fund Bill Goes Up For First Vote Today
(New York, NY) — It appears a bill that would permanently extend the expiring 9-11 Victim Compensation Fund has the votes to make its way through Congress. But yesterday, sick 9-11 responders, as well as advocate and comedian Jon Stewart, were in DC to make sure lawmakers are really on their side. Lawmakers and first responders in New York City are looking to extend the fund permanently, which is set to expire next year. In addition to extending the benefits, lawmakers and first responders are looking for an increase of past payments to people sickened by toxins at ground zero. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who’s gotten in the way of 9-11 funding in the past, has signaled he backs this current bill.
