Separatist Movement Trying To Petition Chicago To Be Its Own State
(Undated) — It’s not so much that the people of Illinois want to leave, but rather they want Chicago to go. Petitioners have been gathering support for the past two years to make Cook County the country’s 51st state. The current drive to divorce Chicago from the state is linked to the urban-rural divide of the state. Downstate separatists point to divides on abortion, the legalization of marijuana, and gun control as particular sticking points driving their desires. Illinois’ status as a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants is also a divisive issue, though the separatists claim their’s is not a racist movement.
