New UI De-Icing Research Could Improve Safety, Shorten Delays
(Urbana, IL) — New research by University of Illinois grad students could improve travel safety and shorten delays. The grad students at the UI Mechanical Engineering Labs have been testing current de-icers and searching for a better method. The key element in a new study is indium tin oxide which loosens ice when pulses of energy are sent through it, allowing ice to slide off the surface.
