Glik’s Coming to the Cross County Mall
A fourth-generation, family-owned retailer with more than 65 stores across 10 states will open its newest location in the Cross County Mall in March, its 13th shop in Illinois. Glik’s is headed to the former Hallmark space inside the mall that also briefly housed a dollar store last year. Renovations are scheduled to start immediately, and the Mattoon location plans to carry men’s and women’s merchandise.
For over a century, Glik’s has weathered many storms—from depressions, recessions, and wars to the advent of megastores, culture shifts and the onset of online retailing. Styles, too, have changed, from simple jeans and overalls to fashion-forward and high-tech outdoor gear.
In 1890, Joseph Glik had the idea of selling top-quality merchandise from a horse-drawn wagon in rural areas of Missouri and Iowa. His reputation for customer service came to be as renowned as his affordable prices. Since that time, almost every other retailer of the day has long since disappeared. Today, not only does Glik’s survive, it thrives and is recognized as the 14th oldest retailer in the United States.
Today, Glik’s carries such brands as North Face, Silver Jeans, Roxy, Elan, Love Stitch, Everly, and more.
Area shoppers should know the name, as the store was originally located in the Cross County Mall until about 15 years ago. Other nearby Glik’s stores are in Taylorville, Terre Haute, and the recently re-located Effingham location.
Since Rural King purchased the mall, The Cross County Mall has seen renewed life. The mall now has several new businesses, including Rural King, Marshalls, McQuarter’s Pub, and C&C Kettlecorn all opening in the last year, as well as the Claire’s store relocation. The “Elevate” business incubator is also currently under construction and will be opening this spring as well.
