(Los Angeles, CA) — Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas is dead. His son, actor Michael Douglas, announced his death at the age of 103 on Instagram. Michael said that to the world, his father was an icon of Hollywood’s Golden Age, but to him and his family, Kirk was a loving father, grandfather and husband. Michael noted that his father leaves behind a “legacy in film that will endure for generations to come.” Kirk Douglas was best known for his roles in “Spartacus,” “Champion,” “The Bad and the Beautiful” and “Lust for Life.” With “Spartacus” he also helped break the Hollywood blacklist by giving screenwriting credits to blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.

His film debut was in 1946 opposite Barbara Stanwyck in “The Strange Love of Martha Ivers.” Other roles followed including that of an unscrupulous boxing hero in the 1949 classic “Champion” which made him an international star and earned him his first Oscar nomination. Some of his most famous films included “Young Man with a Horn,” “Paths of Glory,” and “Spartacus.” He is also the father of actor Michael Douglas.
He received three Academy Award nominations. He never took home the gold for any of his performances. However, he did receive an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was also an author, having written ten novels as well as memoirs.
