
Here is a press release regarding an arson fire in Charleston from Steve Bennett- Fire Chief
Date: May 16, 2020
On May 16, 2020 at around 2:30 am the Charleston Fire Department was
dispatched to 123 Vine in Charleston for a report of smoke coming from a window
air conditioning unit. When crews arrived on scene they found smoke and fire
coming from the unit. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire. The
residents were home at the time of the fire and were able to escape. Fire damage
was limited to the window frame, but there was some smoke and water damage
through the home. No injuries were reported. The fire investigation was
conducted by the Charleston Fire Department, Charleston Police Department and
the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Crews were on scene until around 9:40am
Evidence recovered at the scene indicated an ignitable liquid was used. A suspect
was identified, is in custody, and is suspected of Aggravated Arson. The police and
fire departments were assisted by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the
Coles County State’s Attorney’s Office. All media inquiries should be directed to
