Rep. Chris Miller joins several area lawmakers in signing letter of support for Judge Amy Coney Barrett
Oakland, IL – State Rep. Chris Miller and several other Illinois lawmakers sent in a letter of support for Judge Amy Coney Barrett who has been nominated to the United State Supreme Court.
“I saw where numerous Republican leaders from across the country sent in letters of support for Judge Amy Coney Barrett,” Miller said. “I thought, why don’t I ask some of my colleagues to also send a letter of support? So, we sent in a letter. Judge Barrett is a good, decent person who is eminently qualified to serve on the highest court of the land. Our letter probably will go unnoticed but weighing in is not a big lift and besides our nation’s leaders should listen to what the people of this great country have to say.”
Joining Rep. Miller in signing the letter were: State Reps. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville); Dan Caulkins (R-Decatur); Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City); John Cabello (R-Machesney Park) and Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport).
The letter is addressed to: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham and Ranking Member Diane Feinstein. The letter states:
“As legislators in the State of Illinois, we represent hundreds of thousands of people who elected us to stand up for their values. Our constituents are watching the nomination hearings of Judge Amy Coney Barrett with great interest because Judge Barrett has a lot in common with the people we represent.
Judge Barrett is a conservative woman who has balanced a career with the demands of her family. While few if any of our constituents can claim to have ever met Judge Barrett, they know many women of faith just like her and they are in strong support of her nomination.
There is no question about Judge Barrett’s qualifications. She has answered the questions thrown at her with poise and she has demonstrated a deep understanding of the law. She looks like someone who has been through this process before and, of course, she has. She has been able to answer questions without the aid of notes and there is no question she will be a capable addition to the Supreme Court. She is indeed a fitting replacement for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
On behalf of our constituents, we urge you to confirm her nomination. These nominations should not be based on partisan rancor but rather on the merits of the individuals selected and by that standard, there is no question Judge Amy Coney Barrett is qualified to serve on the Supreme Court.”
