ISP Conduct Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation

For Immediate Release

DECATUR – On October 12, 2022, Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Zone 5 was contacted by the Decatur Police Department and the Macon County Sheriff’s Department to investigate a shooting incident involving the Decatur Police Department and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.

Preliminary information indicates a traffic stop was initiated. The vehicle stopped and the officers approached the vehicle. The driver was ordered to show his hands and did not comply. A handgun was observed by the officers. When the officers attempted to remove the driver from the vehicle, the driver produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the officers. The officers returned fire, striking the driver. Two officers were struck and transported to a local hospital. The driver was struck and transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The Macon County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the driver.

This is an active and ongoing investigation and no additional information will be released at this time.
