For Immediate Release – August 25, 2023
Charleston Town Meeting To Be Held September 12
All residents of Charleston and the surrounding area are invited to attend a Town Meeting at the Charleston High School Auditorium on Tuesday, September 12th at 5:45pm.
Charleston recently enlisted the help of the MAPPING the Future of Your Community Program through the
Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University, to take a proactive approach to planning for the future of the community. Through a series of MAPPING sessions, Charleston citizens developed high priority goals for the future of the community, and a plan of action for achieving the goals. This passionate group of volunteers would like to share the goals developed through the program at the Town Meeting, and recruit additional community members to become involved.
The six goals the group has chosen to pursue are:
1) Shopping and Dining
2) Campus and Community
3) Parks and Recreation
4) Beautification and Infrastructure
5) Arts
6) History and Tourism
Each goal has an action team working on projects specifically designed to achieve the long term goal. All community members are invited to attend the town meeting, to learn more about the goals, and to get involved by joining an action team.
Charleston Mayor, Brandon Combs and Dr. Jay Gatrell, President of Eastern Illinois University, will make short presentations at the meeting, as well as members of the MAPPING the Future of Your Community Program staff, and representatives from each goal group. To conclude the meeting, there will be time to browse booths set up by each goal committee, and learn more about their group’s projects, followed by desserts from the CHS Industries program.
The Charleston Town Meeting will be held at the Charleston High School Auditorium on Tuesday, September 12th at 5:45pm. All community members are encouraged to attend to learn more, and get involved in the community development efforts.
