Charleston Police Department Addresses Concerns Over Unsanctioned “Pop-Up Parties”
The Charleston Police Department is aware of recent events near Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois, where a large, unsanctioned “pop-up” party resulted in a tragic shooting and left two people injured. We also recognize similar trends on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, advertising unapproved gatherings near the campus of Eastern Illinois University (EIU) this upcoming weekend.
The safety and well-being of Charleston residents, EIU students, and visitors are our top priority. We understand the concerns raised by the community regarding the potential influx of individuals from outside the area to attend these unsanctioned events. The Charleston Police Department, in collaboration with the Coles County Sheriff’s Office, Eastern Illinois University Police, and other local agencies, has taken proactive measures to ensure public safety.
Steps We Are Taking to Ensure Public Safety:
* Monitoring Social Media: We are closely monitoring social media platforms for any information related to planned “pop-up” parties or other unauthorized gatherings. Our aim is to prevent potential disruptions or illegal activities before they occur.
* Enhanced Police Presence: There will be a significant increase in visible law enforcement presence throughout Charleston, particularly in areas adjacent to the EIU campus. This is to deter dangerous or illegal activities and promote a safe environment.
* Proactive Crowd Management: Should any large gatherings or unsanctioned parties arise, we will act swiftly to disperse crowds, address violations, and ensure compliance with local laws. This includes citing any unlicensed events or individuals illegally selling alcohol.
* Traffic and Parking Enforcement: To maintain order, we will be enforcing parking regulations and towing vehicles in violation of city ordinances.
* Partnership with Emergency Services: The Charleston Police Department is working closely with medical and emergency service providers to ensure a prompt response to any accidents, injuries, or public health concerns that may arise.
The recent incident in Normal is a stark reminder of the risks involved with these unauthorized events. We urge anyone considering attending or organizing unsanctioned parties to reconsider the potential dangers and consequences both legal and related to student standards.
Our goal is to keep our community safe and peaceful. We ask residents, students, and visitors to help us by avoiding participation in illegal or dangerous activities. If you see something concerning, please report it to the Charleston Police Department immediately.
