Israel Joins SBL FMC Internal Medicine
Shemariah Israel, MD, is the newest Internal Medicine Provider in Suite 1 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Family Medical Center in Mattoon, providing primary care for adults in the community. “I’m very excited to get to know the people in the community and get involved in the area,” he said. “Most importantly, I’m honored to be able to provide quality care for community members.”
A career as a physician was not the first choice out of high school for Dr. Israel, MD, but it is the career he enjoys as a member of Sarah Bush Lincoln.
A native of North Chicago, Dr. Israel hails from a large family, which includes four siblings and many relatives, but he is the first in the family to choose a career in medicine.
After graduating high school, Dr. Israel received an associate degree in science and enrolled at Southern Illinois University, where he earned bachelor degrees in biological sciences and economics in 2011. “Before graduating, I decided to pursue a medical career,” he said. “I also love economics, and I thought that would be a good option as a backup.”
Dr. Israel earned his master’s in applied economics from Illinois State University (ISU) in 2015, and he earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield in 2021.
Before joining SBL, he completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin and the Southern Illinois School of Medicine in Springfield. After years of schooling and his residency, Dr. Israel is ready to practice and put his skills and knowledge to use caring for community members.
“This is an opportunity to put what I’ve learned into practice and help people seeking quality care,” he said.
Primary care is special to Dr. Israel because he enjoys creating a long-term relationship with the people he treats and enjoys seeing them progress over time. He takes an individualized look at every person he cares for.
“There is no one size fits all when it comes to treating people,” he said. “I look at what each person needs to meet their health goals. I want to work with everyone to make the best care plan specifically for each person.”
