IL Freedom Caucus Lawsuit Challenging Budget Process is Set for a July 3rd Hearing
Springfield, IL – The Illinois Freedom Caucus lawsuit challenging the unconstitutional process used to pass the state budget will be heard in court on July 3rd.
The Illinois Constitution requires every bill to be read on three separate days in each chamber, a safeguard designed to ensure transparency, prevent abuse, and protect the taxpayers. However, in recent history that rule has been ignored many times. Instead, Springfield insiders take unrelated bills, gut them with amendments, and ram through thousands of pages of last-minute government spending often just hours before a vote is called. The Illinois Freedom Caucus lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of the budget process.
The Illinois Freedom Caucus is issuing the following statement on the upcoming court hearing.
“The one thing the Legislature is Constitutionally obligated to do is pass a budget. We go into every legislative session knowing that of all of the issues in front of the Legislature – passing a budget is the one thing we must act upon. And yet, time and time again, the Democratic leadership waits until the last possible moment to pass the budget and they violate the Constitution in the process. The people of Illinois deserve better. We have five months to follow the Constitution and vote on the budget the right way. What the leadership in the House and Senate are doing is not just wrong, it is unconstitutional, and we are calling them on it.”
The lawsuit has been filed in Sangamon County. The case will be heard at 8:30 am.
