The City of Mattoon has temporarily closed the beach at Lake Mattoon due to a harmful algal bloom, which can produce toxins that pose health risks. Water samples taken today confirmed the bloom’s presence. Residents are advised to avoid any contact with the water.
Treatment is planned, but spraying is on hold until oxygen levels in the lake improve. The beach will remain closed until further notice.
