Windsor and Martinsville Schools Begin School Year Phone Free
Charleston, IL – In alignment with a growing national movement and supported by recent research, Windsor and Martinsville School Districts are implementing phone-free policies for the 2025-2026 school year to enhance student focus and well-being. In partnership with the Regional Office of Education #11, both districts have invested in secure phone storage solutions to ensure compliance while prioritizing a distraction-free learning environment.
Windsor School District has adopted Yondr pouches, magnetically sealed fabric pouches that securely lock students’ phones during school hours, preventing access and fostering engagement in the classroom. Similarly, Martinsville School District has chosen NuKase hard cases, durable and tamper-resistant storage units designed to keep phones safe and support the district’s no-phone policy. Both systems allow phones to be unlocked via a magnetic device at the end of the school day, ensuring ease of use for students.
The decision follows months of discussions with school boards, parents, and students, with both districts noting significant community support, including from students themselves. “Our goal is to boost student engagement and reduce disciplinary issues related to cell phone use,” said Windsor Superintendent Erik VanHoveln. Martinsville Superintendent Bob Waggoner echoed this sentiment, stating, “We are committed to creating an optimal learning environment that prioritizes student safety and academic success.”
Dr. Kyle Thompson, Regional Superintendent, highlighted the evidence-based benefits of phone-free schools. “Research increasingly shows that reducing phone distractions improves academic performance and mental health,” Thompson said. “Our office is proud to support Windsor and Martinsville in this initiative and stands ready to assist other districts exploring similar policies.”
