Smoke may be visible around Lake Charleston and the Woodyard Conservation Area on Friday morning. The City of Charleston plans to carry out a controlled burn to manage native habitat and further maintain natural areas. City crews will begin the prescribed burn on the morning of Friday, February 27th, with the permission of local fire authorities. The burn will be handled by trained staff following several safety measures that are in place to keep the fire contained.
Firebreaks have already been set up to prevent the flames from spreading beyond the targeted areas, and crews will remain on site until the burn is fully extinguished and there is no risk of reignition.
Any additional questions about the prescribed burn? Contact Community Development Director Abigail Youngblood at 217-345-5650.
