Mattoon Police officers were sent to the BP gas station on Charleston Avenue at 12:18 p.m. today regarding a male suspect wanted on a Coles County warrant sitting in a white truck. The 911 caller alleged that the wanted person was Blake Bolen. The information was verified that there was an active warrant for Bolen’s arrest for failure to appear on a charge of possession of methamphetamine.
Upon arriving at the station, an officer approached Bolen’s truck. Upon seeing the officer, Bolen put the truck in reverse and fled the scene. Mattoon officers gave chase which eventually led them to Route 45 northbound.
The chase came to an end when Bolen turned into the southbound lane of the oncoming traffic and struck a CN Railroad 10-wheeled truck.
Both the driver and occupant of the CN Railroad truck reported no injuries, however, Bolen was airlifted to Carle Foundation Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The Illinois State Police were called in to work the accident and conduct the investigation due to Mattoon officers being involved in the chase.
