(Chicago, IL) — Governor Rauner is expected to announce tomorrow whether he’ll sign a bill that would put limits on what local police can do to help immigration agents. So far, Rauner has only said that what’s called the Trust Act is under review. The bill would bar state and local police from arresting a person solely on the basis of their immgration status or on a federal immigration detainer, unless a judge has issued a warrant. The measure is backed by immigration rights activists, some church groups, some local police chiefs and some business groups. However, Rauner has refused at least twice to state where he stands on the bill. Rauner has mostly avoided commenting on sanctuary city or immigration questions, except to say there should be a comprehensive federal policy.
