(Harare) — Americans in Zimbabwe are being urged by the U.S. Embassy to shelter in place as violence has erupted in the capital city of Harare. Explosions were heard and military vehicles are on the streets after the African nation’s army commander threatened to step in to calm political tensions over the successor to President Robert Mugabe. The country’s military insists they are not taking over the government. In a statement read on state television, the army said it was taking action to deal with criminals that are causing social and economic suffering to the country. They said the 93-year-old Mugabe and his family were safe and secure.
