(Dallas, TX) — Vice President Mike Pence says the federal government will work to get to the bottom of what happened during a mass shooting in southern Florida. Speaking at an event in Dallas today, Pence said the full resources of the federal government will help support the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and its investigation. He added no child, teacher and staff member should ever be in danger in a school and no parent should fear for their child’s safety at school. Pence said the Trump administration is focused on bringing renewed energy to making schools safer. They will take a look at giving law enforcement and local authorities the tools they need to deal with individuals struggling with mental illness. Pence noted the Justice Department is working with other agencies to study the intersection of mental health and criminality. President Trump will be meeting with the nation’s governors in the next few weeks to make the safety of the nation’s schools the top priority for the administration.
Accused Florida gunman Nikolas Cruz is being held without bond on charges of killing 17 people and injuring more than a dozen more during Wednesday’s shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Police say the 19-year-old former student has confessed to the deadly shooting.
