Cranberry Producers, Facing Glut, Again Ask To Destroy Some Crops
(Undated) — A group of cranberry producers is asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture for permission to throw out 25-percent of its harvest this year. The Boston Globe reports the cranberry Marketing Committee is frustrated over the low prices that are being charged for their product, which they say is being overproduced. The percentage being requested would translate into 100-million pounds of cranberries, some of which would be composted; other portions could be sent to charities or researchers, as was the case last year with 15-percent of the product, according to the Globe report.
