(San Francisco, CA) — A project is underway to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The giant patch of plastic garbage floating out in the Pacific has reportedly grown to twice the size of Texas, and is located about halfway between California and Hawaii. Yesterday, a ship set sail from San Francisco on its way to the garbage patch to start a project called The Ocean Cleanup. The supply ship is towing a long floating barrier to contain the garbage. The group plans to corral the floating garbage and tow it back to the West Coast. The Dutch non-profit group hopes to eventually have a large fleet of about 60 cleanup ships, with the goal of cleaning half of the garbage patch within five years.
